Will this help to limit internet usage?
The short answer is no. Since internet is full of tools such as “Enhancer for YouTube™” for Firefox which allows user to automatically set YouTube videos to certain quality 8K to 144p videos.
So, what has changed?
What I tested with Microsoft edge the videos are automatically set to 720p videos or lower depending on the internet speed. You can still change videos to higher quality if you wish to do that.
If YouTube would want to help decrease internet usage they should disable over 4K videos from YouTube for 30 days.
Here is interesting chart to check.
According to this website 1 Hour of 720P 60FPS video takes almost 2GB of data. And when we talk about 4K or 8K videos the amount of data is 16GB for one-hour video. So, one hour of 4K video would use 5-times more data comparing to Full HD video.
YouTube should decrease internet usage during this pandemic they should set limit for 1080p since 4K videos take huge ammount of internet bandit.
